Grand National Extra Places: How to Compare Bookmakers

Betfred, Betway and the rest: what to compare, and how to tell if an offer is worth taking

Every year the bookies compete for Grand National business with extra each-way places. The offers look similar and are not. One firm pays six places at a fifth, another five at a quarter, and the price on the horse can differ too. This page is how to compare them in five minutes, and what the offers were last year.

Checked: 23 October 2026. The 2027 terms (race day Saturday 10 April 2027) are not out yet. We update the snapshot below when they are.

What to compare

  1. The number of places. Standard is four for a big handicap. Extra-place offers are usually five to seven.
  2. The fraction. A quarter (1/4) pays more per placed horse than a fifth (1/5). More places often means a smaller fraction.
  3. The odds themselves. The best terms are no use if the price on your horse is smaller.
  4. Best Odds Guaranteed. If it applies you are paid the starting price when that is bigger. See Best Odds Guaranteed explained.
  5. The conditions. Is the offer online only? Does it apply to ante-post bets or only on race day? Is there a maximum stake? Is it for every customer or only new ones?

Open the Grand National page of each bookmaker you might use, or use an odds-comparison site, and note these five things for the horse you want. It takes a few minutes and often changes the choice.

Is an extra place worth a smaller fraction?

Use the table on Grand National each-way terms. In short: at 20/1, extra places at a fifth beat four places at a quarter if you think the horse is more than 20% as likely to finish in the extra places as to finish in the first four. At 50/1 that figure is about 23%.

This only works when the odds are the same. If the offer with more places has a smaller price on your horse, work out both returns for your stake before you decide.

What the bookmakers offered in 2026

A snapshot of the 2026 Grand National (11 April 2026) from published comparisons. It is last year’s offers, not this year’s, and fractions were reported differently by different comparisons, so treat it as a guide to the range.

BookmakerPlaces and fraction reported for the 2026 race
BetfredSix places at 1/5 (reported by two comparisons)
Paddy PowerSix places at 1/5, online
LadbrokesFive places; the fraction was reported as 1/5 in one source and 1/4 in another, so check
BetwaySix places at 1/5 in one comparison; check its own page
OthersBetween four and seven places across the big firms. Check each firm’s own page.

We will update this table when the 2027 offers are published, and take out any firm that withdraws its offer.

Before you take an offer

  • Offers are for adults of 18 and over, and some are for new customers only.
  • Read the terms on the bookmaker’s own page, not a summary, including the fraction and any minimum number of runners.
  • An offer is not a reason to bet. If you had not already decided to back a horse, it is not worth backing one for the extra place.

FAQs

Which bookmakers pay extra places on the Grand National?

Most of the big bookmakers do, but the number of places and the fraction differ and are announced close to the race. In April 2026 they ranged from four to seven places. Compare the places, the fraction and the odds on your horse.

What are Betfred’s each-way terms for the Grand National?

Betfred’s 2027 terms are not out yet. For the 2026 race two published comparisons listed Betfred at six places at a fifth of the odds. Check Betfred’s own Grand National page for the current terms.

What are Betway’s each-way terms for the Grand National?

Betway’s 2027 terms are not out yet. One published comparison listed Betway at six places at a fifth for the 2026 race. Check Betway’s own Grand National page for the current terms.

Do extra places always beat the standard terms?

No. They usually come with a smaller fraction, one fifth instead of one quarter, so they pay less on each placed finish. They are better when your horse is likely to finish in the extra places.
